Consecrated in 1092, Lincoln Cathedral was damaged by fire in 1141 and by an earthquake in 1185. St Hugh, Bishop of Lincoln, began work on reconstruction in 1192. The style was early gothic, with the use of flying buttresses and large roof spans. The collapse of the central tower in 1237 or 1239 was a major setback; it was rebuilt from 1307 to 1311. The western towers were raised around 1370-1400. All three towers had spires until 1549, when the the central tower's spire blew down. The remaining two spires were removed in 1807, resulting in the cathedral as it stands today.
